The award was bestowed by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. They received this honor because of one particular employee. Darryl Smithson was a Marine Reserve, Master Sergeant. “He’d been activated to Iraq. Had gone to Iraq and come back to us for about a month. He was reactivated and went to Katrina, and then on to Iraq again. And got hurt,” said Kushner, “And over the next course of about four years we kept his job open for him while he was getting himself back whole and able to come back to us.”

Smithson originally nominated the previous fire chief, Phil Johnston, for the individual Valor Award, then nominated the City for their support of veterans and military.

The Warrensburg Fire Department currently has two reserve members on their staff, but have had as many as six in recent years.
