SCOTLAND COUNTY, Mo. — A crash near Arbela left one man dead and another in critical condition early Sunday morning.

According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers were called to County Road 456, a mile west of Arbela around 4:00 a.m. Sunday.

An all-terrain vehicle operated by 24-year-old Harley D. Stone, of Memphis, Mo., was traveling east on 456, and was struck by a pick-up truck operated by 29-year-old Christopher M. Chabert, also of Memphis, as the ATV crested a hill.

Stone and a passenger, 21-year-old Jacob A. Blessing, also of Memphis, were not wearing seatbelts, the report says. They were ejected from the vehicle in the collison.

Stone was pronounced dead at the scene by the Scotland County Coroner and Blessing suffered serious injuries. He was taken to University Hospital in Columbia to receive care.

Chabert now faces a single preliminary charge for driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Scotland County Jail, where he was eligible to post bond. Formal charges are currently pending.
