Chillicothe’s Vern R. Glick American Legion Post #25 will host the
District Two High School Oratorical Contest at the Litton Agri-Science
Learning Center on Saturday, January 15th, at 1pm.

Contestants from High Schools within the nine-county District Two area
will compete to continue to Zone, State, and National Contests for a
chance to win university scholarships up to $18,000.  District Two
counties include Carroll, Chariton, Grundy, Linn, Livingston, Mercer,
Putnam, Randolph, and Sullivan.

Contestants will speak on some aspect of citizenship and the constitution
in two stages:  The first will be a prepared five to six minute
presentation, and the second will be three to five minute extemporaneous
presentation on a topic assigned during the contest.  The public is
welcome to attend.

Our District winner will advance to Zone Competition to be held before
February 7.  State Competition will be February 19th in Jefferson City and
National Winners will be selected in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 15
through 17th.

The purpose of the contest is to develop knowledge and appreciation of the
United States Constitution, the ability to think and speak clearly and
critically, and the acceptance of the duties, responsibilities, rights and
privileges of American citizenship. The contest meets guidelines of the
Missouri State High School Activities Association, and appears in the
Advisory List of Contests and Activities, of the National Association of
Secondary School Principals.
