JEFFERSON CITY, MO Labor Day Vacationers and College students are taking to the roadways and the Missouri Department of Transportation wants motorist to be aware of the increased risk for accidents. The Missouri Highway Patrol says there have been 34 deaths this month alone on Missouri highways and 502 total deaths so-far for 2019. Missouri State Patrol Sergeant Scott White say motorist need to pay attention and look ahead because highway circumstances can change in a second.
Sgt. White says people do not think a serious accident is going to happen to them, but the MSHP sees these distracted accidents all the time.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration says 3,166 Americans were killed by distracted driving in 2017. Travelers can go to Traveler.Modot.gov for the latest conditions and road work.
