A ruling by an international court this week is being denounced by USDA secretary, Sonny Perdue.

In a statement Friday, Perdue said a ruling by the European Court of Justice places new genome editing technology into a classification of technologies that produce GMO’s. Genetically Modified Organisms are placed under certain international regulatory oversight. Perdue says, this classification will inhibit innovation with the new technology. Genome editing is a practice wherein pieces of DNA are removed, replaced, or otherwise altered or modified in an organism. Perdue says this classification of genome editing as producing GMO’s will have strategic innovation and trade implications for U.S. agriculture.
