An alleged stabbing in New Franklin Thursday night left two residents hospitalized. Click to hear KMZU’s Kristie Cross talk to Howard County Sheriff Charlie Polson:
“From the statement we received from Mrs. Leighton and her children, she was in the shower when Mr. Leighton came into the bathroom and stabbed his wife twice in the side,” said Polson,” The children heard the altercation. They came in and he turned on the them. Mrs. Leighton pushed her husband into the shower. The children then grabbed their mother, got her out of the house and into the car to seek medical attention.” Law enforcement and emergency personnel met the vehicle at Snoddy’s Convenience Store where Wendy Leighton was transported to University Hospital in Columbia.
According to Polson, deputies, as well as the Highway Patrol SWAT team, responded to the home in an attempt to locate Jeffrey Leighton. After failed attempts to make contact, officers broke out windows and sent a robotic camera into the residence to locate the subject. When this failed, they teared gassed the home. Leighton surrendered to authorities at approximately 12:30 a.m.
Upon observation, it was discovered that Leighton had several self-inflicted stab wounds in the abdomen, neck, and wrist. He was also transported to University Hospital. Both wife and husband are listed in stable condition.
Polson says charges are expected to be filed later today.
