CHICAGO — A few routes run by Amtrak are closed through Thursday.

According to a press release, increased rail traffic caused by freight trains being diverted to a Union Pacific Railroad route between Kansas City and St. Louis has led to a temporary suspension of Amtrak Missouri River Runner service. This includes trains 311, 313, 314 and 316.

A temporary track closure on a BNSF Railway route used by the Amtrak Southwest Chief has led to a temporary suspension of service between Kansas City and Hutchinson, Kan. as well.

This service change is in effect through Thursday, May 23.

Chartered buses are covering the routes and are stopping at all stations, but delays are expected.

The Amtrak Thruway Bus (Routes 8903 & 8904) to and from Oklahoma City and Newton, Kan., as a connection to the Southwest Chief, is also suspended for this period.

Anyone planning to travel should check their train status on Amtrak.com, allow extra time to get to the station and be extremely careful in stations and on platforms.
