KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Kansas City woman is charged with slashing the face of her son’s girlfriend. Forty-two-year-old Vera Adams faces assault and other charges. Adams allegedly used brass knuckles with a built-in knife to slash the 23-year-old victim’s face.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Governor Jay Nixon is set to make an announcement this morning about a planned expansion at a western Missouri biodiesel plant. Nixon is scheduled to make the announcement along with executives from Paseo-Cargill Energy, local officials and representatives from the Missouri Soybean Association.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The four campuses of the University of Missouri System are joining a national movement to increase the number of college graduates by 2025. The university will be one of about 500 schools involved in Project Degree Completion, which works to improve access and diversity as well as the number of students getting degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A new University of Missouri lecture series is honoring a young politician who died 36 years ago in a plane crash while campaigning for the U.S. Senate. Jerry Litton was a rancher and two-term congressman from Chillicothe who died in while flying to a victory party. The inaugural Litton lecture will be held on Monday and feature farm broadcaster Orion Samuelson.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican Todd Akin says he’s topped $1 million in online donations for his campaign against Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill. Akin mounted an aggressive online fundraising drive in August following his remarks about women’s bodies having ways to avoid pregnancy in what he described as “legitimate rape.” Akin has repeatedly apologized since then.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — British adventurer Dave Cornthwaite has completed a 1,000-mile swim down the Missouri River. Cornthwaite embarked on the journey on August 10th in Chamberlain, S.D., and he reached St. Louis 58 days later. He says he had to avoid obstacles in the water and risk hypothermia along the way.
