JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal lawsuit is seeking to block a new Missouri law making it a crime to disturb a worship service. The lawsuit filed yesterday by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union claims the law is illegally vague and will infringe on free-speech rights guaranteed by the U.S. and Missouri constitutions.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Officials in St. Joseph are considering a new tactic in the war on copper thefts: photographs. Police and city officials are weighing whether to require businesses that buy metal to keep photographic logs of all sellers. The businesses would upload the photos to an online reporting system.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Defenders of Missouri’s method of appointing appellate judges are rallying against a proposed constitutional amendment to change the system. For decades, judges on the Missouri Supreme Court and the state Court of Appeals have been selected by the governor from three finalists recommended by a special commission. But a question on Missouri’s November ballot would change the makeup of the commission and require the group to nominate four finalists instead of three.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – The chairman of the Missouri Republican Party says Congressman Todd Akin is threatening the party’s chances of winning in November by remaining in the U.S. Senate race. Chairman David Cole said in a memo this week to members of the Republican State Committee that Akin’s comments about pregnancy and rape are “not just a distraction” but “pose a threat to our party’s chances of retaking control of the U.S. Senate”.

The Ozarks County School Association is working with local residents and building owners to preserve the schools and transform them into community hubs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has been designated as “StormReady” by the National Weather Service, more than a year after a tornado caused millions of dollars in damage. The Weather Service says the designation gives airport personnel improved communication and safety skills that could help save lives during future storms.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City has a new facility for delivering high-risk babies that will officially open next month in a permanent space. The center caters to high-risk newborns and includes two specialized delivery/operating rooms, four labor and recovery rooms and a sibling playroom.
