MARSHALL, Mo.- According to a press release The Missouri Valley College men’s and women’s soccer team will enter their 2015 seasons ranked in their respective coaches’ polls. The Viking men’s soccer team is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, while the women’s team will enter the season ranked No. 23.
The men’s soccer team will play five teams ranked in the preseason poll. The Vikings play No. 4 Grand View (Iowa) University, No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University, No. 15 Ashford (Iowa) University, No. 19 Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) University and No. 20 Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Two more opponents are in the “others receiving votes” category, including Baker (Kan.) University and Kansas Wesleyan University.
Missouri Valley is coming off a 2014 season that featured the program playing its fifth-straight NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. The Vikings won their tournament opener over Judson (Ill.) University 5-0, but lost the University of Northwestern Ohio on penalty kicks, in the second round. The Vikings finished with a 15-4-1 overall record and a 7-0 record in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, claiming a conference championship.
The men’s soccer team has now been ranked in 55-straight coaches’ polls, the third-longest active streak in NAIA men’s soccer. Also, earlier this month, the Vikings were chosen, along with Grand View, as the top teams in the Heart Preseason Men’s Coaches’ Poll.
The Viking women’s soccer team starts the season at No. 23 in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. Last season, the women’s team finished just outside the top 25 after going 11-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play to finish second in the Heart standings.
Last season, the Vikings were ranked in two editions of the coaches’ poll, and reached as high as No. 23 in the Oct. 7 version. Earlier this month, the Vikings were picked to finish second in the Heart Preseason Women’s Coaches’ Poll.
Missouri Valley will play two teams ranked in the preseason poll. The Vikings will play No. 2 University of Northwestern Ohio and No. 6 Benedictine (Kan.) College. Missouri Valley opponents in the “others receiving votes” category include Baker (Kan.) University, Kansas Wesleyan University and Ashford (Iowa) University.
