Alex Gilbert

Lafayette County Prosecuting Attorney Kellie Wingate-Campbell filed charges Thursday against the father of a ten-week-old child.  Brenlee Gilbert was found unresponsive at a home on Linn Road, southwest of Odessa, on Friday, May 17.  She died Monday from injuries allegedly inflicted by Alex Gilbert, 24, of Independence.  An autopsy performed the following day revealed Brenlee had several broken bones, including a skull fracture.  The Jackson County Medical Examiner ruled the baby’s death a homicide.

According to the Probable Cause Statement, Gilbert was the only person to be alone with Brenlee in the 24 hours prior to her hospitalization.  He had reportedly been seen on previous occasions tossing the ten-week-old in the air.  The mother also reported finding bruising on the bottom of the 10-week-old, and claims Gilbert said it came from bouncing the child up and down on his knee.

Alex Gilbert has been charged with second-degree murder stemming from an incident on May 15, according to online court records.  His bond was set at $500,000.

Gilbert entered a plea of “not guilty” at an arraignment Thursday morning.  A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th at 9:00 a.m.
