JOHNSON COUNTY, Mo. – According to the Johnson County Fire Protection District out of Warrensburg, Mo., crews battled a fire in downtown Chilhowee late Sunday afternoon, September 25, 2016.
Three different firehouses were dispatched to a commercial structure fire at the intersection of Walnut Street and Pennsylvania Avenue about 3:15 p.m. While responding personnel were informed the fire had spread to a second commercial structure.
Johnson County Fire Protection District had assistance from the Johnson County Fire Protection District Number 2, as well as fire departments from Holden and Urich. The Warrensburg Fire Department responded with a ladder truck.
The main building involved reportedly was the closed Chilhowee Grocery LLC and the second building was being used for storage. Both buildings reported as a total loss.
About 3 a.m. Monday morning, units with the Johnson County Fire Protection District had to be dispatched to the scene again as the fire had rekindled in both buildings. Crews worked to extinguish the remaining fire and cleared the scene about 5:53 a.m.
The cause is still under investigation. KMZU news is waiting for comment from an official with the Johnson County Fire Protection District.
