KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City, Missouri no longer considers marijuana possession a crime.

That’s according to Thursday’s City Council vote, 9-4, which reportedly decriminalizes “possession or control of marijuana.” According to the Kansas City Star, The action follows an American Civil Liberties Union study earlier this year that indicated African-Americans were more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.

Mayor Quinton Lucas said the legalization would improve relations between police and citizens.

Marijuana possession remains illegal at the federal level.
