BOONE COUNTY, Mo. – A man who was believed to have exchanged gunfire with a Saline County trooper in January, later died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
That statement is part of a letter from Callaway County Prosector Chris Wilson, clearing three Columbia officers of wrong doing in the death of Troy Bateman. Wilson was appointed as a special prosecutor after the Columbia officers exchanged shots with Bateman during a traffic stop on Oakland Gravel Road three days later. An autopsy revealed that none of the officers rounds hit Bateman and evidence was found indicating Bateman died of a close contact wound.
