Richmond and Holden put on a back and forth battle for the crowd Friday night.

Week seven of high school football included a matchup between the Richmond Spartans and the Holden Eagles Friday. Both teams were 4-2 coming into the contest.

Richmond would elect to receive the opening kickoff, but on their first play from scrimmage the Spartans fumbled at their own 20 and the Eagles recovered. The Richmond defense held the Eagles to just three points as Garet Ricketson split the uprights from 43 yards out, giving the Eagles the lead, 3-0.

Both teams struggled with turnovers as each squad put the ball on the ground or threw a pick a total of seven times in this matchup. That included back to back interceptions by both teams.

One pick led to a score at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter when Holden struck again as running back Austin Tevis scrambled in from the 14 yard line for a touchdown. The extra point was good and Holden was cruising with a 10-0 lead.

But within just a minute, Richmond would strike on a huge 47 yard touchdown pass from Quinton Maxwell to Dylan Seely. The point after was good and the Spartans pulled within three, 7-10.

The Spartans would then go on a two score run without an answer from Holden, who was stifled by an impassioned Spartans defense. The first was an 18 yard strike through the air as Maxwell hooked up with Sam Owen with 6:55 left in the third. The point after was good and the Spartans took a 14-10 lead with 3:32 left in the 3rd quarter.

The next Spartan TD was a quarterback sneak at the goal line as Maxwell punched it through. The point after was missed however and the Spartans were up 20-10.

Then as the third quarter ticked off the Holden Eagles would finally answer with a 33 yard rush to pay dirt by Austin Tevis. The extra point was good, making the score 20-17, Richmond.

The next series the Spartans marched down to the Eagles’ three yard line, but two back to back false starts and then a disastrous hold set the Spartans back to the Holden 37 yard line. The Spartans punted with 2:25 left in the game. Holden would go down the field and with just 22 seconds left, Austin Tevis struck again, this time from the 1. The point after gave the Holden Eagle’s the lead at 24-20.

Richmond would try to mount a last second scoring drive, but the Eagles would swarm and rush Quarterback Maxwell including a sack at the Eagles 37 yard line as the game ended.

The Spartans fall to 4-3 as they host the Knob Noster Panthers next Friday.

Holden improves to 5-2 with a trip to Carrollton coming up Friday to take on the Trojans.
