BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo. — An accident on Interstate 29 south of St. Joseph sent two drivers from out-of-state to an area hospital Monday night.

According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-29 at the 37.8 mile marker, about five miles south of St. Joseph around 9:36 p.m. Monday.

A sport-utility vehicle operated by 28-year-old Latifa K. Phelps, of Bartlett, Tn., was traveling behind a second vehicle, driven by 70-year-old Murrysville, Pa. resident Edward L. Stockton.

Phelps attempted to pass Stockton’s vehicle and struck it in its rear. Phelps’ SUV then began to skid and ran off the west side of the interstate and hit the guardrail before returning to the road and coming to a controlled stop.

Stockton was uninjured in the incident, however Phelps and a passenger in her vehicle, 26-year-old Jordan L. Sonderman, of Hernando, Ms., sustained moderate and minor injuries, respectively. Both were treated at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.
