MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — Her husband says Kim Davis will stay in jail for as long as it takes. Davis was jailed yesterday by a federal judge in Kentucky for refusing his order that she issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
Her office remains open, and granted its first same-sex marriage license this morning. Deputy clerk Brian Mason issued the license and congratulated William Smith and James Yates, shaking their hands as he smiled. The couple embraced and cried.
After the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage, Davis refused to issue any marriage licenses, citing her Christian beliefs and opposition to gay marriage.
