DEKALB COUNTY, Mo. — Two DeKalb County women face charges after admitting to locking a 9-year-old autistic child inside a bunk bed cage for multiple hours.
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Katrina England, 35, and wife Debra England, 39, admitted to locking the child up for more than 12 hours at a time.
When police arrived, they found the home to be in deplorable conditions with animal feces, cockroaches and cigarette butts on the floors. Trash pileup in the front porch of the home made walking difficult. There was no ceiling in the living room and the child’s bunk bed was found to be converted into a cage with 2-by-4’s running along it with a plywood door. There was no mattress inside the bunk and only a sleeping bag was found. Possible drug use also took place in the home.
Katrina England, the child’s mother, also told police she has left the child locked inside and home alone on various occasions.
The 9-year-old is taken into protective custody with the Department of Social Services.
Both women have bonded out of custody.
