With the holidays over, a lot of people are taking down their seasonal decorations. That means getting rid of your fresh-cut Christmas trees. Disposing of the tree is no longer the simple task of dragging it to the curb side and having it hauled to a sanitary landfill. Since 1992, it’s been illegal for Missouri landfills to accept yard wastes or Christmas trees. Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources say that’s because these materials make up approximately 20 percent of the total solid waste destined for landfills. DNR’s Sharon Biggs says there are several options to recycle your tree, including using it for mulch, or creating a wildlife habitat.
