Click to hear KMZU’s Mike Stone speak with Horace Mann Elementary School Principal Todd Fraley and students Breeley Wilson, Brooklynn Greene, Isabelle Lyles, and Rylee Ditzfeld:
The Horace Mann Elementary School in Sedalia is hosting a fundraiser to support the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Principal Todd Fraley said getting involved with the campaign was the idea of students at the school. “I had four 4th grade girls that came to me to propose an idea of wanting to do something for disadvantaged children in the community,” said Fraley, “I told them that was great, but we needed a plan. I thought we could turn it into a community service project for them to take on. The girls have marketed the program and got it out there in both the community and school to receive donations.”
Student Isabelle Lyles explained why this project is important to her. “Because it’s going to help out kids that are less fortunate and it will just make them really happy,” said Lyles.
Student Rylee Ditzfeld told us why she got involved. “I felt like other kids that don’t get presents should get presents and, if the others that always get present at Christmas don’t get them, it will be okay because the other ones need the presents more than us,” said Ditzfeld.
Brooklynn Greene said her decision to help was based on putting others in front of herself. “Just so we can make less fortunate children smile,” said Greene.
Also involved with the efforts is Breeley Wilson who was absent for the interview.
