Are you producing and/or purchasing addition supplements to offset lower quality hay and could that be avoided if you would just purchase a little higher quality forage product? The shortage of winter forages, for most of us, are often supplemented by hay and by-product feeds. Understanding what hay truly is, how we purchase it, how we treat and store hay, how we test it, and how hay is utilized by our grazing animals is a real cost factor in our operation. Just how many bales are needed per cow to make it through the winter months? Will your winter-feeding program effect the body scores on your cattle? Most cattle will respond more favorably to quality growing conditions by rewarding you in areas like higher conception rates, heavier birth weights, and heavier weaning weights. When I last checked all three of these will return higher profits to you at market time. I am not saying high quality hay is the only answer towards these goals, but it couldn’t hurt. Join us as we look at what quality hay is and how it can affect for your operation.
