The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a guided sunset canoe float trip on the river in the Kansas City area from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Registration opens May 1.
MDC staff will lead participants on a float from Platte Landing Park in Parkville to Kaw Point Access in the Fairfax district of Kansas City, Kan. The river is big and the swirling surface currents can look ominous. But once on the water, the river feels relatively gentle and easy to paddle upon in a canoe. This float trip promises to be a leisurely paddle with both sunset along the river and the lights of Kansas City to enjoy.
Shuttle service will be provided from the takeout back to Platte Landing Park. This program is presented in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council. A $20 refundable deposit is necessary to hold a reservation. The number of participants is limited.
A mandatory orientation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 4, in Swope Park. MDC staff will provide float logistics, review paddling techniques, and cover Missouri River navigation skills.
