MERCER COUNTY, MO – Mercer County Fire Department, like many crews over the weekend, responded to reported fires again Tuesday morning.  Respondents said a tree had caught fire near a Smithfield Peach Barn site.

Weekend grass fires were more devastating east of Princeton, off 136 Highway, and on Highway JJ in the southern portion of the county.  Fire officials said the flames spread into timber.  One of the fires was reportedly started by property owners burning trash.  A portion of JJ had to be closed as the flames jumped the roadway, and hay bales caught fire.

Fire crews say it is important to observe burn bans; and residents can be held liable for private or public property damage.
