A home on East 13th Street in Independence sustained heavy fire damage Thursday morning in what some are calling an explosion. Assistant Fire Chief Joe Lay says the call came in shortly after 8:00 a.m. “The first crews arrived to find the victim outside of the home and they were transported to Centerpoint Hospital for smoke inhalation. Thankfully the victim was not burned. A second person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation. That victim was a neighbor who went into the house to get the owner out,” said Lay.
Lay could not comment on the cause saying only that the fire is under investigation. “There is no confirmation that there was any kind of explosion. Crews are still on scene. The fire is out now and they are in the investigation and overhaul mode at this time,” adds Lay.
