A federal grand jury has handed down a 24-count indictment against the former head of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, accusing her of embezzling more than $1.5 million over a seven-year period. The U.S. Attorney’s office says 63-year old Karen Pletz has been charged with 16 counts of stealing from the university, one count of attempting to interfere with the administration of internal revenue, three counts of making false statements on tax returns, and four counts of money laundering.  Pletz’s attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf during her initial appearance Thursday morning in federal court in Kansas City.
