UPDATE: Tuesday – At a sentencing hearing Monday a former teacher was sentenced to eight years in prison for inappropriately touching a student.

A 9 a.m. hearing in Audrain County marked the conclusion of a case against Robert Cortez, 44. He pleaded guilty last year to two counts sexual contact of a student by a teacher.

The eight-year sentence represents the maximum allowed under law.

MEXICO, MO – After a guilty plea was entered this October by a former Mexico, Missouri teacher, sentencing was set to take place Monday at 9 a.m. in Audrain County.

A plea deal was reached in a case against Robert Cortez, 44, in October. He pleaded guilty to two counts, sexual contact of a student by a teacher. The charges originated in 2016 after Cortez inappropriately touched a student during a car ride to retrieve items for a school function.

Cortez may face up to four years incarceration for each felony count.
