Students from the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center are taking part in a community cooking demonstration. Click to hear KMZU’s Bob Allen talk with Fort Osage Director of Public Relations Stephanie Smith:
Smith says the event at the Beans and Greens Farmers’ Market in Brookside is an opportunity for Culinary Arts pupils to strut their stuff. Students will perform cooking demonstrations Saturday morning starting at 8:00. The market contacted the district about coming out and providing exhibitions for patrons to observe.
Smith expects training for the food service industry to become more prevalent in vocational high schools. Fort Osage surveyed students to discover what new programs to add to the school and culinary arts was at the top of the list. As cooking shows become mainstream, more students are exposed to the idea of cooking as a vocation and so the demand for training has increased. Smith sees the program is a tremendous opportunity to learn life-long skills and to prepare for a career in the industry.
