An additional $4.5 million has been made available for Missouri’s low-income home energy assistance program.  Governor Jay Nixon made the announcement on Friday and the extra dollars will bring the total budget for this winter to $18.6 million.

The energy crisis intervention program helped more than 146,000 households to keep their heat on during the winter months of 2014.

Qualifications for the LIHEAP Program:

  • U.S. citizen or legally admitted for permanent residence
  • Responsible for paying home-heating costs
  • Have an income at or below 135% of the poverty level ($26,716 annually for a family of three)
  • Have $3,000 or less in bank accounts, retirement accounts, or investments
