Governor Jay Nixon is part of a group visiting Afghanistan this weekend. According to his office, the delegation was briefed on Friday prior to heading to Ramstein Air Base in Germany where they visited military patients before flying on to Afghanistan.
On Sunday, the leaders met with U.S. Ambassador James Cunningham and then traveled to Bagram Airfield where they met with Commanding Generals and were briefed on deconstruction operations.
Nixon also spent a portion of the day on Sunday visiting with troops from Missouri who are currently deployed in Afghanistan. This includes the 220th Engineer Company based in Festus and the 276th Engineer Company based in Pierce City/Springfield.
Other U.S. Governors on the trip include Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Tennessee Governor William Haslam.
Governor Nixon is expected to return to Missouri on Monday, September 29th.
