A federal judge has lifted the ban on horse slaughter plants in the United States.

Rains Natural Meats, of Gallatin, is one of the facilities affected by the decision. An emergency stay had been put on the two companies’ plans to begin processing equine meat for human consumption, but a federal appeals court lifted it on Friday.

Rains Natural Meats already has horses on site, but it is not clear when production will begin.

The Humane Society has promised to continue their fight to forbid horse slaughter.
