IPolice-Featured-3NDEPENDENCE Mo.- The Independence Police Department is investigating a homicide that took place just before midnight Thursday, September 22, 2016, in the Walgreens parking lot at 23rd and Sterling Avenue.

The press release indicates two suspects are in custody. Police were called to that location on reports of an armed robbery. Once on scene, officers learned that an adult male had been shot in the parking lot.

The victim was immediately transported to an area hospital. The two suspects reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived. Police were able to track those suspects to an apartment in the 1700 block of South Sterling.

One suspect surrendered immediately, while a second suspect refused to exit the building. At approximately 3 a.m. officers received word that the victim had died. The second suspect then surrendered about 25 minutes later.

The identities of those involved will not be released until the family of the victim have been notified and formal charges have been filed against the suspects.
