INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – An Independence woman has been charged and is in custody after a woman was found dead in her home.
According to the Jackson County Prosecutor, Courtney A. Hackney, 33, has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. These charges stem from the Tuesday evening death of Holly D. Barnett, also of Independence.
A caller notified the Independence Police Department of an assault in the 700 block of Walnut Street in Independence. When officers arrived, they found Barnett deceased sitting in a recliner. A baseball bat with blood on it was nearby.
Police later found the defendant in the area of Woodland Cemetery. Hackney told police that the victim was her aunt and also admitted the baseball bat belonged to her.
Hackney is being held on a $150,000 cash only bond. No court dates have been set.
