An infant’s death is under investigation.  Emergency officials in Lafayette County responded around 6:30 p.m. Friday to a home on Linn Road, southwest of Odessa, and found the 10-week-old unresponsive, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.  Click to hear KMZU’s Chelsea Wade talk with Lafayette County Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh:

The baby was transported to an area hospital where it died on Monday.  An autopsy performed Tuesday by the Jackson County Medical Examiner revealed the child suffered numerous broke bones.  The infant’s death has been ruled a homicide.

Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the death of a 10 week old infant. On May 17, 2013, at about 6:30 PM, deputies from the sheriff’s office and Sni Valley Fire and Rescue responded to an address on Linn Road in southwestern Lafayette County for an unresponsive infant experiencing shortness of breath. The infant was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs where injuries to the infant were discovered. The infant was stabilized and transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where the infant died on May 20th.

An autopsy preformed by the Jackson County Medical Examiner on May 21st indicated that the infant suffered numerous broken bones, including a skull fracture, contusions, and brain damage. The medical examiner determined the death to be a homicide. The sheriff’s office is currently investigating.
