David Michel McCowan, 26, of Joplin, who was arrested for, and pleaded guilty on October 9th, to receiving and distributing child-pornography through use of the internet.

The Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force located and identified files on McCowan’s computer as indicative of child-porn, which enabled officers to subsequently issue a warrant and seizure of McCowan’s computer, and enable an arrest to take place.

The U.S. Attourney for the Western Missouri District’s office, credits Project Safe Childhood, which is a national initiative begun in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to fight and reduce child, sexual abuse.

McCowan was sentenced to 12 years and 7 months in federal prison without parole, the longest possible sentence recommended for his crime, and a lifetime of supervised release.
