CHARITON COUNTY, Mo. — A homeless man is facing two child-sex related charges in Chariton County, as stated in Chariton County court documents.

According to a probable cause statement filed in the Chariton County Circuit Court, on Sunday, June 11, officers were called to investigate reports that 22-year-old Christopher Michael Powell, of Keytesville, had purchased alcohol for minors in Sailsbury.

When a 14-year-old victim was interviewed by law enforcement on Monday, June 12, she told investigators that Powell had purchased the alcohol for her and two friends to consume. The group then went to Pots Park before ending up at Sterling Price Lake to drink the alcohol Powell had purchased.

During the interview, the 14-year-old stated that she and Powell had kissed, with both parties being fully aware of each others ages.

She went on to tell officers that she had met the suspect at a carnival that he had been working at on Thursday, June 8. She went on to inform investigators that she had smoked marijuana with Powell on Friday evening. On Saturday, she advised that Powell came over to her house and watched movies with the teen while her mom was gone, according to the probable cause statement. She maintained that no sexual contact was made at that time.

After conducting an interview with the victim, officers located Powell at the Salisbury Public Swimming Pool and arrested him for enticement of a child.

Powell was taken to the Chariton County Sheriff’s Office where was advised of and said he understood his Miranda rights. He told police that he had first met the juvenile at the pool in Sailsbury on Thursday and met up with her again on Friday at the carnival. He also allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana with the teen Friday evening.

The probable cause statement says Powell told investigators he had experienced physical attraction to the 14-year-old girl and stated that he knew it was wrong, but still hung out with the juvenile on Saturday and watched movies and kissed her at her house while the teen’s mother was away.

Powell went on to say that he had touched the victim in an inappropriate sexual manner and had also slept in the same bed as the teenage girl. Powell reportedly alleged that the 14-year-old wanted to have sex with him but he would not comply because “he knew it was wrong.” He continued sharing information, allegedly admitting to another inappropriate sex-related act.

He informed investigators that on Sunday he had purchased alcohol for the group of teens before being arrested at the Sailsbury Pool.

Powell now faces one felony count each of child molestation in the fourth degree with a child less than 17 and older than 4 as well as enticement or attempted enticement of a child.

He is currently in custody at the Chariton County Jail. Bond and a court date have not yet been set by a judge.
