Week two of High School football featured a contest between the Richmond Spartans and the Lawson Cardinals. Lawson was celebrating their home opener after a disappointing week one loss to state champs Maryville.

On the opening kickoff Lawson fans were wondering if another shut out would be the result as Junior Dylan Seeley took the rock 95 yards for the score. The point after was good and with 11:46 left in the first quarter the Spartans were up 7-0.

That lead would last for only a few minutes as the Spartans kick the ball out of bounds setting up the Cardinals in great shape on their own 38 yard line. Two and a half minutes and 62 yards later Senior Dakota Smidt punches it in from the 5 with 9:28 left in the first. The extra point was good and Lawson and Richmond were tied at 7.

Both offenses struggled for the rest of the first quarter before Richmond gets on the board again with a big 54 yard run by senior running back Brock Stokes. A bad snap though doomed the point after and Richmond was up 13-7.

Then another bad kick off that went out of bonds set Lawson up with great field position again on their own 35 yard line.  Three minutes and 65 yards later Cardinals Quarterback Garrett Titus keeps the option and scrambles 15 yards to the house with 8:03 left in the half. The extra point was good and Lawson would get the lead for the first time and for keeps.

Special team’s mistakes were the big issue for Richmond. Their offense stalled again and on the punt Lawson Sophomore Damien Sapp takes it 60 yards for the score setting up an extra point attempt that is good, and the Cardinals go up 21-13.

The Spartans were struggling with the Cardinals in all three phases and would give up two more scores to Lawson in the second half. First a 37 yard strike through the air from Titus to Sapp with 1:40 left in the third would make it 35-13. The final dagger was a 2 yard rush by senior Dylan Cordova, who had already broken a few big runs early in the game.

The final score was Lawson 42, Richmond 13.

Richmond will end their two game road trip at 1-1 with their home opener next Friday hosting Excelsior Springs (1-1).

Lawson will go on the road to play Plattsburg next Friday. Plattsburg sits at 1-0 as they play Salem in a rare Saturday matchup this weekend.
