American Legion Post 60 is partnering with city officials to organize the fourth annual “Freedom Walk” through downtown Lexington. Click to hear KMZU’s Bob Allen talk with American Legion Post 60 Commander Jean Beyer:
Beyer says the walk commemorating the events of September 11th begins at noon at the corner of 13th and Main Streets. The trek leads participants to the Veteran’s Memorial on the lawn of the Lafayette County Courthouse. A brief ceremony will take place at the Memorial including the Wentworth Military Academy Band playing the National Anthem, comments by Beyer, placement of a wreath at the base of the memorial, and the sounding of TAPS to conclude the service.
According to Beyer, the events are taking place on Friday this year in order to involve students from the Lexington School District. Beyer believes getting children to participate is crucial as many of them may not know what happened a decade ago.
