HOWARD COUNTY, Mo.- Stephen M. Murrell, Prosecuting Attorney for Howard County, created some headlines when he issued a letter of resignation to Gov. Greitens on January 26, 2017.
According to Murrell, his last day as Howard County Prosectuing Attorney will be February 17, 2017. Murrell states, ” This has not been an easy decision. I am thankful for the community support I have received as Prosecuting Attorney. I am thankful for the opportunity to work closely with the law enforcement to make our communities safe, and to protect victims.”
The letter also went into Murrell’s thoughts on Prosecuting Attorneys in rural counties and how they are considered “part-time”. According to Murrell, “A different system needs to be implemented to better protect rural communities. The prosecutor is an administrator of justice, an advocate, and an officer of the court. This cannot be performed part-time.
Reports suggest the letter of resignation is not related to the suicide/manslaughter case that has recently surfaced.
