The City of Moberly will sponsor a two weekend multi-sport event this summer. The first weekend of the Magic City Games will take place June 29 and 30 with a swimming competition, the Mid-America Powerlifting Championships, two golf tournaments, and an archery competition. USA Powerlifting, the nation’s premier weight lifting organization, will sponsor the powerlifting championships. Hundreds of athletes from across the state and the Midwest are expected to compete in the events. Later this summer Moberly will become the home of the inaugural multi-sport festival to be known as The Magic City Games. The city of Moberly that earned the knick name of the Magic City when it got its start will be transformed to host five different sporting event over the course of two weekends this summer.
The games kick off on Saturday, June 29th with three of the five events planned. Swimming will be held at the Randolph Area YMCA. “We are pleased to be a part of The Magic City Games,” said Lee Boggess, Executive Director for the Randolph Area YMCA. “Athletes of all ages and skill levels can participate in the swimming event.”
The second of the five sports will also get its start on the first day. USA Powerlifting is bringing their Mid America Powerlifting Championships to the Fitzsimons-Johns Arena on the campus of Moberly Area Community College. “It is very exciting to have the nation’s premier powerlifting sanctioning body coming to Moberly”, said David Gaines, event organizer. “USA Powerlifting brings the best in drug free strength competition to The Magic City Games.” Powerlifters will complete in benchpress, squat and deadlift events.
Golf is also on the list of events for The Magic City Games. “This is a unique tournament allowing the golfer to play on two different 18-hole golf courses in the same weekend,” said golf event chairman, J.P Kelly of Elk Creek Golf Club. Golfers will play an opening round of golf at Elk Creek Golf Club just east of Moberly on Saturday, June 29th. Their individual score will determine in which flight they will be seeded for the championship round that will be played the next day on Sunday, June 30th at Heritage Hills Golf Course.
“Golfer will have the opportunity to test their skills against the some of the best golfers in the State of Missouri that weekend,” said Kit Tennyson, Golf Pro at Heritage Hills Golf Course. “Both golf courses will give the golfer challenging holes that will test their skills.”
Also on Sunday, June 30th those with bow hunting and archery abilities can shoot for the gold medal at the 3-D Archery tournament on the grounds of the NOMO Bow Hunters Club on Highway 23 east of Moberly. Veteran shooters and novice archers alike will compete over a course with varying distances and different full size targets across a wooded terrain.
July 13th and 14th will see The Magic City Games return to Moberly for the second weekend with a baseball tournament. Teams competing in the 12 & under age group will have their chance at the Howard Hills Sports Complex in Rothwell Park. Teams will compete in a tournament that will be played over the two-day weekend.
