KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An Independence resident, who is a Mexican national, has been sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to drug justice-department-gaveltrafficking.

According to the Justice Department news release, Marcelino Ruiz-Reyes, 37, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced Tuesday, August 18, 2015, to 20 years and 8 months in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute methampetamine, possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and money laundering.

Ruiz-Reyes and nine other co-defendants were charged in a May 2, 2013 federal indictment for transported methamphetamine from Mexico to the U.S., distributing it locally, intimidating an undisclosed subject with a firearm and sending the proceeds back to Mexico.
