COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – Two former Missouri politicians who represented the state in Congress for decades are being honored by The Missouri Bar. The official organization of lawyers is presenting a civics award to retired Sen. Kit Bond and former U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton as part of a statewide civic education competition for junior high school students in Columbia. Bond was expected to attend Monday’s ceremony, but Skelton was not. Bond, a Republican, is a former Missouri governor who spent 24 years in the Senate but did not seek re-election last year. Skelton, a Democrat, served 34 years in Congress and led the influential House Armed Services Committee. He lost November’s election to Republican Vicky Hartzler.
