The Missouri Department of Conservation is bringing wild elk back to Missouri. Click to hear KMZU’s Bob Allen’s talk with Spokesperson Joe Jerek:
Jerek says the Department of Conservation is in a multi-year program to restore the elk population in Missouri. The native species was wiped out around 150 years ago. According to Jerek, the agency acquired 34 head of elk to be released in the Peck Ranch Conservation Area.
Jerek explained the Ranch has opened up a portion of their refuge area by creating a driving loop for visitors. Jerek says guests can drive through the Ranch and hopefully sneak a peek at the animals, but they should use caution as the some of the roads may be impassable for vehicles with low ground clearance.
