MARSHALL, Mo. (Press Release)- The Missouri Valley College men’s and women’s golf teams hosted the MVC Fall Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Indian Foothills Golf Course.  Both teams captured championships at the event, with eight individuals finishing in the top five for each team.

The Viking men’s golf team was led to a championship by Senior Kaz Sakai (Palm Desert, Calif.) who shot a -1 (71) to finish in second place, two strokes behind the individual champion.  Freshman Robert Cull (Liverpool, England) and Sophomore Hamish Gorn (Dunfermline, Scotland) each finishing in a tie for third, shooting an even-par (72) in the round.  Junior Shawn Cook (Hamilton, Mo.) placed in a tie for ninth with a +2 (74) to round out the team scorers, and Freshman Jan Jedlicka (Opava-Vavrovice, Czech Republic) finished out the team with a +3 (75).

Two other teams competed for the men’s golf program.  The “B” team was led to a second place finish by Senior Ryan Jones (Oakdale, Colo.), who placed in a tie for fifth with a +1 (73).  The “C” team was led by Junior Nathan Mueller (Aurora, Mo.), who shot a +2 (74) to place in a tie for ninth, and helped the team to a sixth place finish. The Vikings won the men’s tournament, shooting a +1 (289), finishing 11 shots ahead of the MVC “B” team.

The Missouri Valley women’s golf team captured a championship, led by Individual champion Senior Clarissa Molina (McCamey, Texas) who shot a +9 (81) to finish one stroke ahead of both Freshman Josie Petsch (DeSoto, Mo.) and Freshman Emma Sperry (Garnerville, Nev.).  Both Petsch and Sperry shot +10 (82) in their rounds.  Finishing out the team scorers was Freshman Maria Farden (Cheyenne, Wyo.), who finished with a +14 (86) to place fourth.  Freshman Marisol Diaz (Riverside, Calif.) placed in a tie for tenth, shooting a 99 (+27).

A second Viking women’s team played at the tournament, and placed third in the standings, led by Freshman Kristen Carney (Ogden, Utah), who shot a +19 (91). The Vikings won the women’s tournament, shooting a +43 (331) to defeat Central Methodist (Mo.) University by 68 shots.

The Missouri Valley women’s golf team will next be in action at the Statesmen Fall Invite at Edmunson Golf Course in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Oct. 9-10.  The Viking men’s golf team will next compete at The Dominic in Kansas City, Mo., at Swope Memorial Golf Course, Oct. 10-11.  Both tournaments will finish out the fall season.
