MARSHALL, Mo. (Viking Press Release)- The Missouri Valley College football team will begin its 2016 season picked to finish third in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division after today’s release of the 2016 Heart Football Coaches’ Preseason Poll at the Heart Media Day in Olathe, Kan.
The Vikings received 43 points in the preseason poll, finishing behind Baker (Kan.) University, which was picked to win the division with 50 points, and two points behind second place MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University. Evangel (Mo.) University and Central Methodist (Mo.) University were tied at fourth in the preseason poll with 35 points and Avila (Mo.) University came in sixth with 32 points. Grand View (Iowa) University was chosen as the top team in the Heart Northern Division poll.
Missouri Valley is coming off a third place finish in the Heart Southern Division, and a 6-5 record in the 2015 season. The Vikings enter the preseason in the “others receiving votes” category in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top 25 Poll released in April.
“We look forward to improving off of last year’s record, and getting back to competing for a conference championship and a possible appearance in the postseason,” said Football Head Coach Paul Troth. “We have a lot of experience returning, and the coaches are ready to get the season started.”
The Vikings will open the 2016 season with a road game at No. 25 William Penn (Iowa) University Aug. 27 at 6 p.m., in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The first home game of the season takes place Sept. 10 at 6 p.m., at Gregg-Mitchell Field on Family Weekend. Missouri Valley will also play two games that will be broadcast Nationally on ESPN3, KSMO-TV and Mediacom. The first televised game is Sept. 24 at home against Grand View, followed the next week with a road game against Central Methodist on Oct. 1. Kick-offs for both games is set at 11 a.m.
