JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — An Atchison County native will become the next Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court tomorrow.

Judge Zel M. Fischer has served on the Missouri Supreme Court since 2008 and will succeed Judge Patricia Breckenridge as Chief Justice.

Originally from Watson, the most northwestern city in the state, Fischer was educated at William Jewell College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Fischer also has worked as a court clerk, practiced law privately, and served as the Associate Circuit Judge for Atchison County. Fischer and his wife, Julie, live in rural northwest Missouri and have four children.

His term will run through June 30, 2019.
