A few weekends of good weather are left before the winter season really kicks in and the Missouri Department of Transportation is doing what it can with the funds available to prepare for bad weather this winter. Faced with deep cuts in funding, the transportation department is focused on repositioning personnel in time for the first snowfall. Area Engineer Tonya Lohman says they’re stockpiling salt and prepping snow removal equipment this week.
Lohman says MoDOT is also looking at cutting back on the amount of time crews spend on the road after dark.
To date, MoDOT has eliminated 667 staff positions, closed 23 facilities, and disposed of 245 pieces of equipment. Earlier this year, the transportation department announced that the cost to clean up after the state’s historic snow storm was about $7.7 million dollars.
