PLATTE COUNTY, MO – The Platte County Sheriff’s Department is warning seniors of recent phone scams that target elderly people making them believe they are giving to a legitimate cause.

A press release provides two examples of scams that citizens have fallen prey to. One caller lied to a victim, claiming he needed money to be reunited with family. Another case involved a scammer who claimed to have been held against his will by a foreign government.

The Sheriff says citizens, especially seniors, should be vigilant in checking the background of people and organizations. Also, do not give personal or financial information over the phone.
