Marshall, Mo. —Dr. Bonnie Humphrey, MVC president, and Gary Ford, MVC board of trustees chairman, have announced the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation has awarded MVC a challenge grant of $750,000. To secure the Mabee grant, the College must raise $1.4 million over the next 12 months.
According to Humphrey, the College has launched the “Your Valley, My Valley, MissOURi Valley” fundraising campaign for the construction of a Student Activity Center (SAC). Dr. Gordon Imlay ’59 has been appointed chairman of the campaign committee. The committee will be contacting MVC alumni and friends over the next 12 months in order to meet the Mabee Foundation challenge.
“All of us at Missouri Valley are appreciative of the support shown to this project and our college by the Mabee Foundation, and I am confident we will meet the challenge that will benefit generations of Valley student,” Humphrey said. “It is not often in an institutions history that alumni and friends have this type of opportunity to step forward to support such a potentially transformational campus facility. During my tenure as president I have found the Valley family willing, able and eager to help. I look forward to working with the entire Valley family to help generate that same type of support for the new Student Activity Center.”
According to Humphrey, the SAC, which will be located east of Young Hall, promises to provide renewed excitement and commitment to the educational principles and values that make MVC a unique institution of higher learning.
“This new facility will provide much needed space for student interactions and recreation,” Humphrey said. “As our student population has grown there is an increased need for this specially designed facility, which will enhance the student life environment and provide space for student social engagement.”
The $5 million base construction cost upon which the Mabee challenge was determined will provide a 24,000 sq. ft. facility. 18,000 sq. ft. is dedicated to recreation, health, and fitness, and 6,000 sq. ft. is versatile space to be used for both academic activities and for student life recreation. Additionally the facility will contain a coffee house, meeting rooms, and a student lounge with internet access. Construction documents also allow for an additional 12,000 sq. ft of multipurpose space.
According to Eric Sappington, MVC vice president of institutional advancement, the MVC administration has explored the idea of a SAC for the last five years. MVC received the lead gift of $1.1 million for the project from MVC alumnus William W. Malcolm, Jr. To date, MVC has 100 percent participation from its board of trustees with pledges and gifts totaling $1.7 million.
“The unified support provided during the initial phase of fundraising for this project has been outstanding and I am thrilled with the challenge grant provided by the Mabee Foundation,” Sappington said. “And, as we move forward on this project, it will be a genuine pleasure to work with Dr. Imlay and the capital campaign committee members as we connect with Valley alumni and friends to meet the Mabee Foundation Challenge.”
