GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. - The City of Grain Valley files suit against Jackson County Election Board.

Grain Valley Board of Aldermen in an October 24, 2022, meeting updated ward boundaries they say better represent the growing population within city limits. The boundaries were changed after an evaluation determined a need to do so, ensuring equal representation in each ward. A new ward map was drawn and subsequently approved.

City officials indicate upon receipt of the boundary changes on November 14, 2022, they received pushback for the new ordinance from Jackson County Election Board. They were allegedly ultimately told the new boundaries could not be used in the April 4, 2023, election, despite it being current law in Grain Valley.

A city release indicates the decision to file the suit was deemed necessary by the BoA to act after reported attempts to resolve the issue with JCEB were futile. Furthermore, the release states board members believe this is a necessary step to ensure all residents have equal influence on the April general election.
