PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. — September 11 marks the 19-year anniversary of the devastating events that transpired in New York, Washington, D.C. and a field in Pennsylvania. Firefighters share an unspoken bond of brotherhood, as only they can fully understand the sacrifices made that day in effort to save lives.

As the Kansas City 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb event approaches, Captain Mark Stevenson of the Pettis County Fire Department sheds light on how he and his fellow firefighters continue to preserve and honor the memory of so many lost that day.

Visual reminders, like this sign, put firefighters in the frame of mind of what New York City firefighters experienced on Sept. 11, according to Capt. Mark Stevenson. (Photo courtesy of Captain Mark Stevenson/Pettis County Fire Department)
